At Sunbelt Rentals, military employees are vital and valued team members who add to the company’s rich and diverse culture. They share many of the same ideals that help make the equipment rental experience the best it can be: safe, action-oriented, team- centric, and innovative.
Recognizing that re-entering civilian life can be difficult, Sunbelt Rentals developed a robust veterans program to provide the support former military members and their families need. That support begins before the first interview, and goes far beyond the hire date.
Four pillars serve as the foundation of the Sunbelt Rentals Veterans Program: Resources, Recruitment, Recognition, and Retention. At the heart of these pillars are coordinated and concerted efforts to coach, mentor, train, and develop military team members so they can thrive in their new careers.
- Resources. Sunbelt Rentals offers tailored resources to address challenges new team members may be facing. These resources include accommodation support, veterans affairs guidance, and interagency coordination. The company also offers a dedicated internal hotline for military team members to gain timely responses for support and for specific inquiries.
- Retention. Retaining veteran team members requires more than just placing them in roles that align with their skill sets. It also requires additional support along the way — during onboarding, the first 90 days of employment, and throughout their career. Veteran ambassadors offer added support, acting as liaisons to the entire veterans program. The goal is to provide focused support that helps minimize the stress of transitioning from military service to the private sector.
Recruitment. Recruitment occurs through job fairs and partnerships such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes program. The goal is to hire veterans and align the skills they gained during military service with the most suitable role within Sunbelt Rentals, providing the support they need along the way.
The Sunbelt Promise embodies the company’s goal to deliver a rental experience based on availability, reliability, and ease. Military employees’ experience has given them a special insight into the need for reliability, making them excellent candidates for employment. They also bring leadership, a solid work ethic, and technical skills to the company.
As part of recruitment efforts, team members use terms that help align roles at Sunbelt Rentals with a military occupation specialty (MOS). At the same time, they also communicate the company’s culture and fit.
- Recognition. Sunbelt Rentals is proud to have veteran team members and offers opportunities for them to showcase their pride, as well. A uniform program gives veterans the opportunity to display their branch of service with a patch on select apparel. The company also recognizes team members through the Sunbelt Salute — a coin awarded as a token of appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our country.
Making a difference
Former military members are highly trained and talented individuals, and they bring a breadth of experience to the Sunbelt Rentals team. Their passion for the work they do and their dedication to the rental equipment business enriches every aspect of the company. Most importantly, the veterans themselves enjoy the opportunity to put their military knowledge to work building successful civilian careers.
